I’ve always dreamed of staying in a real castle. Well, guess what? I finally got to live out my fairytale fantasies in Germany! I stayed at this incredible place called Castle Liebenstein, and let me just say – it was nothing short of magical. You know me, I’ve traveled a lot and stayed in all sorts of hotels, but this one was something else. From the moment I laid eyes on it, I knew I was in for a unique experience, and it did not disappoint. So, I thought I’d tell you all about it – like a little review-slash story of my adventure.

Arrival: A Journey Back in Time
The first thing I noticed when we were driving up to the castle was how picturesque the entire setting was. Picture this: a gorgeous medieval castle perched atop a hill, surrounded by rolling hills, lush green vineyards, and the Rhine River glistening below. Honestly, it felt like I had just stepped into a medieval painting. I later found out that Castle Liebenstein is one of the oldest castles in the area, dating back to the 13th century! Can you believe that? It felt like every stone, every wall had a story to tell. But more on that in a bit.
Getting there was an adventure in itself. You drive up winding roads that seem to lead you deeper and deeper into history. As we got closer, the castle’s silhouette grew larger, and I could already feel the excitement building. When we finally arrived, it felt like we’d been transported back in time—yet the friendly staff at the castle was so welcoming and warm that it immediately felt cozy and homely despite its ancient grandeur.
The Castle: Living in a Medieval Dream
The moment we stepped inside the castle, I was in awe. The interior is just as grand and atmospheric as you’d imagine—think thick stone walls, high ceilings, and antique furniture. With every step you take into this classic castle, you can feel the history in the air, but there is also this sense of luxury as if they seamlessly blend the past and present.
Our room, or should I say chamber, was everything I had imagined and more. I mean, how often do you get to stay in a real castle room with ancient wooden beams, stone walls, and a view of the Rhine River? The view from our window was straight out of a postcard – you could see the river winding through the valley, with castles dotting the horizon. I felt like a character from a medieval romance novel!
One of the things I loved most about the room was how they’ve preserved the historical details while adding modern comforts. The four-poster bed, for instance, had this charming, old-world vibe, but it was also super comfortable (and let’s be honest, a good night’s sleep is always important, even in a castle!). Beautiful tapestries were on the walls, and the wooden furniture looked like it belonged in a museum. Yet, everything was functional and welcoming. I remember sitting by the window, sipping tea and soaking in the atmosphere. It was pure bliss.
The Castle Grounds: A Walk-Through History
The grounds of Castle Liebenstein are just as impressive as the interior. One of the first things we did after settling in was take a stroll around the castle grounds. There’s a lovely courtyard in the middle of the castle where you can sit and take in the views, and just outside, there are walking paths that lead through the surrounding forests and vineyards.
Oh, and get this – the castle is actually part of a larger complex of castles! Directly next to Liebenstein is another castle called Sterrenberg. These two castles are known as the “Hostile Brothers” because of an ancient legend about two brothers who fought over the land. How cool is that? It’s like staying in the middle of a medieval soap opera! The story goes that the two brothers built these castles so close to each other because they were constantly at odds, and you can still feel that history when you’re there. It gave me goosebumps just thinking about all the events these walls must have witnessed over the centuries.
We also hiked up a small trail behind the castle that led to a lookout point. The view from there was breathtaking – you can see the Rhine winding through the valley, the vineyards stretching out in every direction, and more castles scattered along the hills. It was one of those moments where you must stop and pinch yourself because it’s all surreal.
Dining Like Royalty: The Castle Restaurant
Now, you know how much I love food, right? Well, the dining experience at Castle Liebenstein was an absolute dream. The castle has a lovely little restaurant that serves traditional German fare, and let me tell you – the food was heavenly. I felt like royalty every time we sat down for a meal. The dining room itself is gorgeous, with stone walls, wooden beams, and candlelit tables that make you feel like you’re dining in another era.
From the starter to the dessert, all our dishes were SO good. I was in food heaven! The flavors were so rich and comforting – exactly what you’d want after a day of exploring castles.
Breakfast was just as magical. Every morning, we were greeted with a beautiful spread of fresh bread, cheese, cured meats, and jams. There were also eggs cooked to order, and the coffee was divine. We always took our time at breakfast because the dining room has large windows that overlook the Rhine, so you get to enjoy the view while sipping your coffee. Honestly, it’s the little things like that that made the experience so special.
One of the best things about staying at Castle Liebenstein is that it’s in the heart of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This area is known for its picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and, of course, castles! This region has so many castles – it’s like something out of a fairytale.
The Fairytale Nights: Unwinding in the Castle
I have to tell you about the nights at Castle Liebenstein because that’s when the magic really came alive. After a day of exploring the surrounding villages and castles, we’d come back to the castle and just unwind. There’s something so special about being in a castle at night – it’s quiet, peaceful, and almost otherworldly. The stars shine so brightly out there, and I spent a lot of time just sitting by the window, looking out at the stars and the river below. It was so serene—no city noises, no hustle and bustle, just the peaceful sounds of nature. I felt like I was in another world, far away from everything. It was the perfect escape from the busy, modern world.
Final Thoughts: A Dream Come True
I honestly can’t say enough good things about my stay at Castle Liebenstein. It was everything I had hoped for and more. The combination of history, luxury, and natural beauty made it one of the most unique and memorable travel experiences ever. If you’re ever in Germany (and absolutely should visit), you must stay here. It’s not just a hotel – it’s an experience. You’ll feel like you’re living in a fairytale, surrounded by history and beauty at every turn.
I left Castle Liebenstein feeling refreshed and inspired and with many wonderful memories. It was a dream come true, and I can’t wait to go back someday. Did I tell you about the Baroness of Liebenstein? At the bottom right of their website, there is a little warning that “Sometimes the castle ghost “Baroness of Liebenstein” comes out at night to haunt the stairway to the guest rooms.” Luckily, I haven’t seen anything unnatural. I’m so glad I got to share my little story about my stay at Castle Liebenstein. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
